Manulization

Today, after a month in quarantine (a standard procedure when an animal transfers from one zoo to another), our fluffy beauty Pepe has moved into her exhibition enclosure! 🔥

Pepe is right in the middle of her move to the exhibition area, inside her transport crate 🤗 Photo: Leningrad Zoo.

Her new home is the enclosure where Shu was born and lived in his childhood (he has now moved to a next door, newly built enclosure).

For the first while, the fluffy newlyweds will be switching places so they can get to know each other from a distance first ☺️

We wish lovely Pepe an easy and gentle adaptation to her new home and the most purr-fect introduction to her precious groom, Shu Svenovich the Pallas's cat!

Today in the #HistoricalManulization series – the fluffy gentlemanul Baryshnikov! 🤩

Yes, that was truly his name — this little manul was born and lived at the Cincinnati Zoo in the United States. He was named after the outstanding Soviet and American ballet dancer and actor Mikhail Nikolayevich Baryshnikov, who gained particular popularity in America after his role in the popular TV series Sex and the City.

Baryshnikov the Pallas's cat was hand-raised by the zoo staff. Sadly, he passed away in 2008 at around 3 years of age.

And what’s interesting about his pedigree?

Dear manul curators, thank you all so much for joining in — it was such a vibe!

🎁 We’ll announce the three lucky winners on the website tomorrow morning — don’t miss it! 🙌🏻 (We need a little time to process all the comments.)

⚡️ P.S. Looks like another riddle is already on the way! Achi has joined the breeding season too, and his bride is just as mysterious — hiding in her little house and refusing to show herself! 😅👻

Yesterday, the doors between some of the enclosures were opened — which means the mating season for manuls has begun.

Here are the pairs we spotted:

🔥 Handsome Bandit has become a groom for the very first time in his life!

We haven’t caught a glimpse of his bride yet, but one thing is clear: the boy is astounded!

A whole new territory packed with unfamiliar scents (a quick reminder: Bandit has never moved from his enclosure since kittenhood) is hitting him with a whole storm of feelings. So much new, unknown, and most importantly – unmarked!🤭

For several days we couldn’t bring ourselves to write a single line about this. Words just wouldn’t come — there were none to express how much Zelenogorsk and Karaganda meant not only to the global manul community, but to us personally.

Meet the handsome Manuel the Pallas's cat from the Gdańsk Zoo!😻

Manuel in Gdansk Zoo, December 16, 2025

Manuel has active outlook on life and pure charisma!

During our visit, he worked for the whole manul family😅

While his lovely Ula was sleeping like a fluffy rock on the very top shelf, and their teenage kittens (in their own separate enclosure) were copying mom, Manuel was full of energy and endlessly busy!

Several times a day he diligently patrolled not only his own territory but Ula’s as well! He perched on different shelves, carefully surveyed the surroundings, sharpened his claws, groomed himself with great dedication, did a proper stretch (hey, gotta keep in shape😅), and generously welcomed visitors with grumpy gazes — with that unmistakable “Budapest-style” melancholy — and sometimes even with menacing whisker twitches!

Manuel is incredibly responsible: he personally supervised the air conditioner installation for the summer season in their house together!👏🏻

A female Pallas's cat has arrived at the Leningrad Zoo! 🎉

Manulization

🐾A long-awaited female Pallas's cat named Pepe has arrived in St. Petersburg. She's five years old and came to us from the Barnaul Zoo for temporary care as part of the EARAZA conservation and breeding program for Pallas's cats. We are the second zoo in Russia to host a pair that has produced offspring. Only six zoos in our country have representatives of this fascinating, but challenging, species.

Pepe made it to the Leningrad Zoo without any problems. She will spend a month in quarantine. This is a standard procedure for newly arrived animals, allowing them to be assessed and tested, as well as to allow time for them to adapt to their new surroundings without unnecessary stress.😌

We'll definitely let you know as soon as Pepe goes on display. Follow us on social media!🥰

Akkem* —  another wonderful son of Snezhinka 😻

Akkem* in Novosibirsk Zoo, November 30, 2025

An unusually brave, mischievous, and curious fluffy lad — a whiskered rascal, a tail-waving troublemaker, and a bold fluffy teaser 😄

Akkem has a very proactive approach to life: he spends most of his time outdoors, observing the world with great curiosity. His favorite spot is the tree in the middle of the enclosure — the perfect lookout to keep an eye on everything going on around him.

He’s also incredibly playful: snowballs, pinecones, twigs — everything turns into an awesome toy!

But what surprises us most about young Akkem is how social and confident he is — he doesn’t avoid people, nor is he afraid of them. When he’s in a lively mood, he might even play hide-and-seek with a curious visitor, although his favorite game of all is “hunting” 😈

Here’s how to play: first you’ll see a bold tail raised like a banner, rapidly approaching you. Then comes that naughty, sparkling hooligan gaze. For extra effect he’ll flash you those sharp snow-white teeth and cunning whiskers… and in just a moment, the sweety fluff is perched at the edge of the enclosure, while his paw makes a daring attempt to boop you! 😈

Berel'* lives together with her sister.

Watching them, you can notice that she’s the shyer and more cautious one, and she also looks a bit lighter in color.

And look — her little pouty lips are just too cute! ☺️

You can read the story behind her name, and the names of other Snezhinka's kittens, on our website 🤗

* This is an unofficial name.
