Sun Sanlang from Xining has passed away ๐
Sad news came from Xining Zoo: On February 9, the amazing Sun Sanlang (Dunzi), son of the legendary Sun Simiao and Sun Xiaomei, passed away ๐
The zoo announced this in a notice posted on the Pallas's cat enclosure:
Report of the death of the Pallas's cat "Sun Sanlang"
With deep sorrow and inexpressible affection, the Qinghai Provincial Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Center informs all visitors:
A captive-bred male Pallas's cat, "Sun Sanlang," died on February 9, 2026, at 4:00 PM. The cause was an acute infection leading to multiple organ failure. Despite all measures taken, he could not be saved.
"Sun Sanlang" was born on May 21, 2022, at our center. A significant achievement in the artificial breeding of Pallas's cats in China, he was not only the pride of the Xining Wildlife Zoo but also the embodiment of the staff's enormous work, hopes, and love.
On the morning of February 9, 2026, keepers noticed a deterioration in his general condition. The zoo's veterinary service immediately began examination and resuscitation efforts, and urgently conducted a remote consultation with Professor Jin Yipeng's team from the Institute of Veterinary Medicine at China Agricultural University. A treatment plan was developed jointly. However, after more than six hours of intense struggle, the animal's condition rapidly deteriorated, infectious shock developed, and at 4:00 PM, Sun Sanlang's heart stopped beating.
Recently, his feeding and defecation were normal, his physical condition was good, and his body weight was 4.4 kg. Initial tests for common feline infectious diseases, including panleukopenia, were negative. All necessary samples were sent to China Agricultural University for in-depth postmortem analysis to determine the precise cause of illness and death.
The passing of "Sun Sanlang" is a profound loss for our work protecting and breeding Pallas's cats. He gave us countless moments of wonder and hope. His silhouette, resting by the window, will forever remain a warm and unique memory in the hearts of countless visitors.
We thank him for his short but vibrant life, for the joy and excitement he brought, and we express our sincere gratitude to all members of society and his many fans for their long-term support, attention, and love.
Dunzi was a very brave and surprisingly sociable manul โ he happily came out to greet visitors. He was also a true little spoiled soul: he loved to play, to be scratched, and to soak up the sunshine, sprawled out by the window โ exactly like this he will forever remain in our hearts and memories โค๏ธ
