Almost a year ago, one day short of a year, on May 8, 2025, I was chatting with Zelenogorsk by this very wall of this very enclosure. Zelya came right up, rubbed against the mesh, and seemed to be scolding me about something. And I could just as easily have reached out and touched his side. And I even knew he wouldn’t lunge or grab my hands. But I didn’t touch him — I can’t even make sense of why. Some mixture of respect for the cat, following the zoo’s rules, and simply understanding that you just don’t do that, that it would be wrong.
Today, in the very same spot, Zhora came up to the mesh in almost the same way. And just the same, he could (theoretically) have been touched. And just the same, it never even occurred to me to actually carry out that “touch.” Such a good cat, simply a miracle.
Live long, cat! And make lots more purrziks, purrziks.
