The news of Pallas's cat in China
Hello everyone, I'd like to share some recent and heartwarming news about manuls from China. It's a great example of how conservation awareness is growing here.
Five Pallas's Cat Cubs Found in a Herder's Home in Inner Mongolia – Protected in Place
On May 28, 2026, a herder in the Xilingol League of Inner Mongolia discovered a litter of five wild animal cubs in his summer pasture house. He immediately called the local nature reserve for help.
Staff from the Gurgesitai Nature Reserve arrived and identified them as Pallas's cat cubs, a species under China's second-class national protection. The cubs were healthy, active, and showed no signs of injury, which indicated their mother was likely nearby and able to care for them.

Because manuls are highly sensitive and cubs have low stress tolerance, the rescue team decided against capture or relocation. Instead, they adopted a "minimal intervention" approach. They left the cubs in place, set up infrared cameras for 24/7 monitoring, and worked with the herder to ensure the family could grow up safely in the wild and eventually return to nature on their own.
A Photographer Captures the First-Ever Image of a Pallas's Cat in Manas County, Xinjiang
On May 18, 2026, a photography enthusiast in the southern mountainous area of Manas County, Xinjiang, captured images of a wild Pallas's cat.
This was reportedly the first time a Pallas's cat had been photographed in this area, filling a gap in the region's wildlife monitoring records. The image shows the manul moving cautiously between rocks, a testament to the area's improving ecology and biodiversity.
It's encouraging to see these stories, which show a shift towards more scientific and respectful coexistence with wildlife. The protective measures taken in Inner Mongolia, in particular, are a great example of how local communities and authorities are working together to protect these rare felines.
Hope you found this update interesting! 😊
Note: The Xinjiang sighting is a locally circulated story, not yet reported by major media. Its authenticity is unconfirmed, but it could still be true – please use your own judgment.
