"We would like to inform you that we have performed the amputation of the left hind leg of our Pallas's cat, "Saffron." News updated April 15, 2026.
As previously reported in the news, Saffron, a Pallas's cat kept at Ueno Zoo (born April 13, 2024), has been hospitalized for an extended period due to a fracture and deformed fusion that occurred shortly after birth.
After repeated discussions between the veterinarian and the caretaker regarding the possibility of preserving the limb, the bone destruction of the phalanges was significant due to the spread of inflammation caused by the deformed fusion, so the left hind limb was amputated.
The surgery was performed on February 12, 2026. The postoperative recovery has been good, and Saffron was discharged on March 2nd of the following month. Since then, she has been staying in a non-exhibition area. Considering her long hospital stay from shortly after birth, she will be undergoing rehabilitation for some time. It will likely be some time before she can be shown to everyone, but please be patient while Saffron recovers her strength and muscle mass.

Надеюсь что всё обойдется как можно лучше😢

Why is it the left side? Her mother, Primula, also had a problem with her left front leg, her sister Ablikos had a problem with her left eye, and even Vadim, who was at the Moscow Zoo, had a problem with his left eye.

Linmei, Her grandpa Lev had problems with a left paw, too :<

And her grandfather Karaganda had his left eye inflicted, as well.

It's really unfortunate these beautiful cats' left side is so unlucky.

Linmei, Yes, I've always wondered about this too: why the left one? Most Pallas's cats with eye problems have damage to the left eye. The right eye, of course, can be damaged, but much less frequently.

Unfortunately, we still haven't found an answer to this question 😐

We asked this question to specialists who work with Pallas' cats, but they have no explanation for it.
