At Ueno Zoo, the manul Naim lives in the “Night World” pavilion: in such exhibits, day and night are inverted, that is, switched around 🌓

During the day, artificial night reigns for visitors in such pavilions, while red lighting is switched on for the animals.

In general, in “night worlds,” zoos use red light quite often so that visitors can see the animals, while the animals themselves perceive the space as dark.

The thing is that cats (and many other animal species) have poor discrimination of long-wavelength red light. Their vision is mainly tuned to shades of blue and green, so dim red lighting is much less noticeable to them than, say, white 👌🏻

In short, it doesn’t stress them out, and the animals continue to behave as if it were night and display their natural nocturnal activity.

In good night enclosures, the light usually looks muted red, but not bright red, since the goal is not to illuminate the enclosure, but to give people a chance to see at least something, without turning night into day for the animal 🌚
