Pallas Pilgramage!

Hello manulovers! This weekend I made my second ever visit to see a manul at the Brookfield Zoo! Last time I visited Ruby and Johan were very sleepy and I did not get many good photos, but this time they were very active!

One of the little manuls was pacing the enclosure, enjoying the toys, rolling in the dirt, and climing. I believe this was Ruby. There was a sign up outside the enclosure saying Johan had a small injury and might be seen walking with a limp. When I watched them roll around and pace the enclosure with no limp, I thought it must be Ruby. But looking at the gallery, it may be Johan....manul experts please advise!

The other manul stayed in one spot most of the time and chatted with the crowd! He said ekekekeke and even honked a little bit. Since it never moved, I thought this one might be Johan, due to the injury.

The most exciting part was how the manuls interacted! Ruby kept running up and jumping at Johan, and they would hiss at each other until she walked away. It reminded me of Bol and Polly.

They have a very large enclosure, but half of it was fenced off for maintenance. I wonder if they were tired of being in the same space. The visitors actually walk above part of the enclosure, so even when the manuls are up high you can see them very well. I was surprised at how active they were - every other cat we saw was having a midday nap!

It was a good day.

Thank you for sharing, Jay! The videos are particularly lovely. They do remind me of Bol and Polly! I’m very interested to know what is going on with the closed off part of the enclosure. Perhaps some new scenery for the manuls to play in!

Hi, Brookfield keeper here! You have your cats switched. The one walking around is Johan. Ruby prefers to sit up high and judge haha. Johan does not always have a limp, just some days depending on weather and his activity. :)

catkeeper, Also, the exhibits do not connect, those are two separate enclosures. Johan used to live on the other side of the bridge, but since they get along so well, we just let him live in Ruby's side with her

catkeeper, Oh thank you!! I'm glad he doesn't always have a limp. He was definitely getting around! And it's sweet that they've moved in together! Thank you for looking after them!
