"We would like to inform you that we have performed the amputation of the left hind leg of our Pallas's cat, "Saffron." News updated April 15, 2026.
As previously reported in the news, Saffron, a Pallas's cat kept at Ueno Zoo (born April 13, 2024), has been hospitalized for an extended period due to a fracture and deformed fusion that occurred shortly after birth.
After repeated discussions between the veterinarian and the caretaker regarding the possibility of preserving the limb, the bone destruction of the phalanges was significant due to the spread of inflammation caused by the deformed fusion, so the left hind limb was amputated.
The surgery was performed on February 12, 2026. The postoperative recovery has been good, and Saffron was discharged on March 2nd of the following month. Since then, she has been staying in a non-exhibition area. Considering her long hospital stay from shortly after birth, she will be undergoing rehabilitation for some time. It will likely be some time before she can be shown to everyone, but please be patient while Saffron recovers her strength and muscle mass.

Надеюсь что всё обойдется как можно лучше😢

I have been trying to figure out what Manul this is, and reverse image searching has gotten me nowhere! Does someone recognizes him/her, or does someone recognize this zoo enclosure? This is one of my favorite images, and I would love to know who it is!

Zelenogorsk was recently overtook by Grusha in terms of like count. And because Gorsk is the king of all manuls and the symbol of manulization, he deserves more respect. I encourage you to pay your respect to Gorsk by liking him until he passes Grusha. Long live the king.

Sad news came from Ueno Zoo: on April 8, 2026, the beautiful Yus passed away 💔

Photo: Ueno Zoo

She lived a very long manul life—she was nearly 16 years old 🙏🏻

Yus was born on May 4, 2010, at Ueno Zoo together with her brothers Naim and Doro to the manuls Bayar and Lalaa. She spent her entire life at her home zoo.

In recent years, the staff had noted age-related changes in Yus, though she maintained a good appetite and remained under close observation by specialists. In early March, her condition worsened, and after examination she was diagnosed with an esophageal disease. Despite veterinary care, sadly, Yus could not be saved.

Question about the new zoo in Khimki

Julia

Roman, Vika, hello! Can you tell me a little about this new zoo or what kind of organization it is where you found our missing Loloshki? They say it's not a zoo, but some kind of organization that trades animals. Judging by the ownership (LLC), it's a private company. Why do zoos sell animals to private owners, who then resell them to other zoos? Can't zoos sell animals to each other without intermediaries? I don't know how it works, of course, but you're probably in the know and know more. Thank you!

I guess the model is lev😻

Lev became the model of some works of this sculptor Hashimoto Mio. (Who carved the prototype of the Gashapon toys)

For example, this one. (This is not only a sculpture but also a pillow!)

Sarnai and Batu in Prospect Park Zoo, April 5, 2026
Sarnai was standing in her favorite ball tray enrichment toy, completely unbothered, while Batu sneaked up behind her with decidedly mischievous intentions (photo taken on April 4, 2026)

Yesterday was the 10th birthday of Batu, the Pallas's cat at Prospect Park Zoo. I specifically drove to Brooklyn to visit the fluffy birthday star. But the biggest surprise was getting to see Batu's fluffy wife, Sarnai, who is rarely spotted — what a beautifully delicate-faced cat she is!

It all came together thanks to the zoo's Pallas's cat keeper, Ashley — whose name I actually learned from the HBO documentary series The Zoo, Season 3, Episode 9: "Grumpy Cat's New Digs," which introduced Batu and Sarnai and showcased the construction of their new exhibit. I was lucky enough to run into her while I was watching the cats, and I got to ask her about how both cats are doing. Their breeding season this year just wrapped up, and the breeding process has not been very successful. These two have been a breeding pair for many years. A few years ago they had a kitten that died young, and later a mass was found in Sarnai's uterus. Ashley mentioned that the zoo has already collected semen from Batu, so artificial insemination is an option if needed in the future — and it turns out the birthday boy Batu actually has high-quality Pallas's cat sperm!

After I explained why I'd come and mentioned that I had never once seen Sarnai, Ashley said she wasn't going to let me leave empty-handed today (so kind of her!), and went into the back den to fetch Sarnai's favorite enrichment items — a tray of balls and a tray of wooden blocks. And that's how we got the beautiful Sarnai finally venturing out into the outdoor exhibit.

The two cats seemed to get along quite well and appeared comfortable with each other. Sarnai is such a beautiful rose— Batu is a lucky guy! The last time I visited, Batu had been pacing the outdoor exhibit in what looked like repetitive patrol behavior, and I was worried he might be developing a stereotypy. But yesterday I observed a much wider variety of behaviors, so I think I was overthinking it — after all, Prospect Park Zoo is a zoo with decades of experience caring for Pallas's cats. He got his birthday rat treats, did a round of patrolling outside, and polished off his meal — the whole show, which I managed to miss entirely, unfortunately! Thank you for taking such a good care of them, Ashley!

Here's hoping both little cats stay healthy and live long lives! I'm already planning to come back next month for Sarnai's 10th birthday : )

Hobbies of the Manuls

dzien_dobry_w_olivie

The one thing that absolutely melts my heart is seeing that some of the manuls have some particular things they specialize in. That includes:

  • Abrikos pretending she's a beaver chewing some trees.
  • Nar who is the master of cleaning windows and apparently is fascinated by the Binturong that lives next to him.
  • Lotos who is obsessed with his boxes (like all the cats but from what I see he's enjoying it the most).
  • Bol and Polly which loved to just chill and contemplate in their favorite spots on the exibition.

Did you observe any other Pallas cats having some sort of interests or a hobby?
