Pjotr—the endearing Pallas's cat, who used to live in Rotterdam Zoo.

He was born on May 21, 1998 in Korkeasaari Zoo to the family of Pushkin the Pallas's cat and Pavlova the Pallas's cat. Read more about the travels of Pjotr.

Pjotr was given his name in Korkeasaari Zoo where he was born. Korkeasaari has a wonderful tradition of giving animals names that start with a particular letter each year, gradually moving through the alphabet. In the year this litter of Pallas’s cat kittens was born, it was the letter P. But the zoo staff decided to take the idea a little further and connect all of the kittens’ names with the name Peter, which comes from the Greek “petros”, meaning “stone” or “rock”! Pjotr is a Slavic form of the name Peter. So he got the most direct and obvious version of this litter’s little “rock” theme. Read more about the names of Pjotr.

Unfortunately Pjotr is not with us anymore. He passed away on October 9, 2008, he was ten years old.

Pallas's cats rarely live more than 5 years in the wild. In zoos under human care Pallas's cats live longer. Pjotr lived a long and happy manul-life in comfort and being loved.
